Bakeries in Aoba-ku, Yokohama. Every bakery is different and they are all good! (1)

Mini white bread of Tokutaro bakery

If speaking of train stations, Tama-Plaza, Azamino, Ichigao and Aobadai on the Tokyu Denen-toshi line. Moreover, Center south and Center North on the Yokohama Municipal Subway. In this area, there are more than 20 independent bakeries.

All of them are very unique. From standard bread to one of a kind bread, and new bread, there are many high-level bakeries who always strive for quality.

There are some bakeries which accept reservations, so I used to call a bakery at their opening time in the morning to reserve white bread, baguette etc. Otherwise they will be sold out in the afternoon and the bakery will be closed. The bakeries around here basically close as soon as breads are all sold out.

Another point to note is that many bakeries are “far from train station”. In addition, some bakeries don’t have parking lot, either. So those who like to buy breads, are required to make up their mind to make efforts.

Not saying “I can only eat breads of this bakery”, I have become to buy various breads from many bakeries recently. Every bakery is different and all of them are good.

With gratitude to bakeries and breads that make us happy!

Not just a small bakery in a residential area. “Petit Rapin” is a bakery where you can meet funny bread like no other

  • The address : 9-22, 4-Chome, Eda-Nishi, Aoba-ku, Yokohama

This is a bakery that a female baker manufacturers and sells all by herself. From the nearest train station, Ichigao, it takes about 20 minutes of slow walk, located close to Eda-Nishi Elementary School.

The bakery is loved by neighboring folks, everyone enjoys chatting with her while choosing their bread. The shop is attached to her home where her gentle husband comes out, to distribute tastings, and to bring fresh bread for stock. The line goes forward slowly.

From left in clock wise order, Onigiri-bread, Fujisan (Mt. Fuji) bread and Baked curry bread

Despite the cute shop, breads are so original. The line-up is very aggressive that reflects the baker’s unique ideas. Inside of Fujisan bread, matcha (Japanese green tea) bread and matcha cream with modest sweetness. There is no other bread like this.

Inside of Fuji san bread has also Mt. Fuji shape

Baked curry bread has full of spicy curry inside, with lots of meat and potatoes.

Not fried bread but baked bread matches with spicy curry

Onigiri-bread has plenty of sweet and spicy beef stewed. I’ve never seen such bread. Very aggressive approach!

Surprisingly, flavor of nori seaweed pasted is a nice accent

The shop is so small as only one person can enter. Like a dwarf’s house.

Cute, unique, fun and very delicious.

The cheerful smile of the baker that we can meet at the end of the line, makes waiting time less painful.

A long-established bakery with stable popularity in the neighborhood owned and run by Mr. and Mrs. Tokunaga.

Their attitude to continuously respond to the voices of customers and to pursue delicious bread for 30 years is really a great deal of respect. An on-line shop was opened in 2020. Despite long history as a bakery, they never stagnates and continues to evolve as a front runner.

When the shop was first opened, it was located near Tama-Plaza station. In fall 2011, they built a new, large shop and relocated to Moto-ishikawa cho. Now it is 30 minute walk from Tama-Plaza station or need to take a bus. There are 15 parking lots for cars in the shop. There may be a long line of cars but the rotation is rather fast, so stay calm and wait. On the other hand, the Yotsubako shop is just off Center-Kita station.

They sell various types of breads. Freshly baked breads are brought from the kitchen one after another while queue up. Standard breads with handmade sweet bean paste or fillings are so delicious. Also lots of breads with bakers’ little nice idea added, surprise you “wow, never known this combination!”.

From left in clock wise order, An-pan, Apple danish pastry, Milk cream

Milk cream is synonymous with Tokutaro. Sweet, rich and tasty cream are inside of crispy, small baguette. It’s amazing to come up with this combination.

Seasonal danish pastry. Crisp bread with stewed apple. Autumn color and taste.

Anpan with full of sweet bean past cooked at the shop. A sure thing!

It is a simple bread, but when you go to Tokutaro, you are recommended to try mini white bread. It is palm size, one size smaller than regular white bread.

Just by changing the size, different taste! Because of its small size, you can enjoy thick toast. White bread is actually a measure to judge nice bakery!

Two bakeries are introduced this time, however there are still many delicious bakeries in Aoba-ku Yokohama that make us happy.

Please look forward to next time!
