I don’t quit the company. How to continue “the work I want to do” at the company

It’s been almost 30 years since I joined the company as a new graduate. I was past prime of my working life, and now I work under instructions from my junior fellows.

But I don’t quit the company (unless I’m fired).

Able to interact with young people, getting touch with new knowledge, and making use of my own expertise and personal connections to make my task easier, all of them are because I work for the company.

I think there are many advantages that I can obtain from working for the company.

Above all, my salary can support my everyday life. So I can devote myself to hobby and fun. Yes there were many things I’ve been through. But it is a waste to quit, over 30 year of working experience for the company!

Here are some tips for continuing the work you want to do at the company.

Decide on your major and clearly indicate your intention

It is very important to clearly declare to your boss, what you like to do, which field you like to deepen, and what your main job and specific scope of work. Just like declaring your major. By doing so, you can also declare that “I will not do anything else (other than my interesting field)”.

It is a waste of time if you spend tremendous time on work that isn’t related to your major. It doesn’t lead to your growth, either. If you work like a shop that sells everything, they will use you as they want.

Of course, it may happen that you would think “the past experience support current myself”. However it only happens if you consciously change your majors.

It is a virtuous cycle for you and your surroundings, to always do work related to your major.

Raise your hand first for work that sounds interesting

For those who are always busy with their main job, it is difficult for their bosses to ask them for chores. Therefore I quickly go and get jobs that sound interesting.

Fill your working hours with the jobs you want to do. That way, extra work will not come near.

But do not pick up jobs that have no relation with your main job and your major.

An additional tip. The jobs that do not sound interesting but if someone is in trouble and you can do it, raise your hand. Human relationship is to help each other. You can be helped someday, too.

The basics are important. Keep your promise

Trust is important to continue the work you want to do. If you are judged as a person of no trust, the work you want to do will not come to you.

  • Deadline
  • Schedule
  • Do what you said that you would do

These are especially important. Of course, sometimes you may not be able to keep the promise. If so, you contact your counter part in advance. Then you can avoid yourself to lose trust.

“It doesn’t concern me” . Tweet in the heart

I never said so when I was actively working with responsibility.

However, if the position changes, the way of thinking also changes.

“It’d be better to do the other way” “Oh, it will be failed definitely” Though I think so, I won’t say anything that I haven’t been asked.

Young people have ideas and the way they do, that the Showa (old) generation can never imagine. I don’t want to derail them by any chance.

But I feel a bit uneasy. Then I tweet in the heart, “it doesn’t concern me” and forget.

Will not refuse if asked by young people

In this era of declining birthrate and aging population in Japan, young people are just valuable. If young colleagues ask for something whether it is lunch or drink, whether it is business advice or support,

I will not refuse.

Young people know many things that the Showa generation doesn’t know. Even from an internship student, there are many things I can learn. I would like to enjoy the interaction with them.

Besides, if you want to continue working at a company, you don’t want to be said by your young colleagues, as “what is that person doing?”

If they ask me, my answer is “with pleasure!”

The company and me, we have no grudge each other

I admire professionals who quit the company and start their own business, or freelances who earn making use of their skills and talents.

The reason why I launched this website was that I wanted to quit the company someday and make use of my own skills to live, at the bottom of my heart.

However, the reality was harsh.

As an ordinary person, I now think that it would be more efficient for me to continue doing the work that I want to do in the company.

By the way, if I knew that my working life would end up like this, could I have worked in a way that was a little easier for me and those around me?

Well, I don’t know..

In fact, easy work is not so memorable.

If one of the things that I can bring with me until I die is “memories”, the days I worked very hard with my colleagues and business partners taking responsibility became “memories” in my life. I didn’t listen to what my boss said. It didn’t really benefit the company, either.

After all, the company and I are both equal and have no grudge each other.
